On April 1, NTT Communications started “P-chocom”, a new prepaid electric money scheme suitable for micropayment. The service requires no maintenance fee, but users are required to pay 300 yen initially.

“P-chocom” is an option for “Safety Pass Chocom”, NTT Com’s electric money using IC cards. But this service can be used without becoming a Safety Pass member. Amount for charge and payment is limited to 50,000 yen. Charge can be made by credit card, internet banks, or money order. The new service can be used at more than 1200 online stores or services. NTT Com started offering Chocom Pack, for refunding 0.3% of purchase amount with P-chocom points.

P-chocom does not rely on dedicated software or tools. It can be used anywhere as long as user is connected to the Internet. NTT Com plans to apply this service to networked games or digital TV programs. The company is considering selling the scheme to service providers.
