ITS is an abbreviation for Intelligent Transport System. Its definition by Japanese Transport Ministry is: the new transport-related system aimed to solve road transport issues such as accidents and traffic jams by networking people, roads and automobiles with cutting-edge information communication technology.

Kunihiko Takahashi of NEC is the Chairperson of Platform Department at Internet ITS Consortium. He outlined the activities of this Consortium and its future plans.

Most significant about Internet ITS Consortium is that it was started with IPv6 as a given technology. The Consortium defined that they would work for realization of common ITS infrastructure based on IPv6. More specifically, the Consortium aims to share technology, acceleration of research and development through collaboration, and assistance of new entry to this market.

Takahashi pointed out the reasons they have adopted IPv6 as follows:

1. A large number of IP address will be necessary to match the number of automobiles.
There are 77 million automobiles in Japan, and more than 700 million in the world. Each of these automobiles needs to be constrantly connected for various services.
2. Automobiles need Mobile IP and automated configuration of network environment
Automobiles need information services at parking garages and gas stations as well as on the road. Communication media need to be automatically switched based on the location of vehicles.
3. Automobiles need a variety of services
There is an opportunity to utilize global addressing to offer information push services, automatically updated security services, voice interface with VoIP, and urgent simultaneous information delivery using multicast, among others.

IPv6 is crucialto meet these requirements, said Takahashi.

He added that automotive manufactuers will be required to conduct identity management of their cars through their entire product cycles. It will be necessary to come up with an IPv6 address management policy for automotives that includes used car treatment.

The Consortium plans following activities at ITS conference in October 2004:
  • gas station services based on vehicle ID
  • road services through remote monitoring
  • operation management and contents distribution for public vehicles
  • traffic information generation and distribution from data aquired by probes
  • general telematic services
  • remote human health check
  • location-based services using vending machines as access points
  • check-in/check-out management for parking garages
  • contents distribution for taxis and buses
  • driver assistance with traffic information
  • easy-to-operate service interface
