Takashi Arano, chairperson of IPv6 Deployment Committee at IAJapan (The Internet Association of Japan) explained that a new attempt to capture various statistical data to measure the degree of IPv6 diffusion had been started in the form of a new working group in IAJapan in November 2003.

Collected data will be used as a base material to market IPv6 technology. The new committee also will attempt to find correlation between significant events or trends and these statistics, so that they can build some form of hypothesis about IPv6 diffusion.

The committee will decide on a framework on the research, defining necessary metrics, and start using some of them in this fiscal 2003 (ending March 2004). The committee will start comprehensive measurement work in the next fiscal year. It plans to develop necessary measurement tools.

Related activities are seen in 6memo project in Europe, CAIDA in Canada, WIDE in Japan, University of Oregon in the United States and others. Arano said that the new committee will utilize existing useful tools, while it will cooperate with other organizations in the world with similar objectives to feed back the research accomplishment to the world. Generally, the committee plans to look atquantitative measures that show IPv6 network size, the degree of IPv6 transition, reliability and stability of IPv6 communication and characteristics of IPv6 Internet.

For example, the size of Ipv6 Internet may be measured by such statistics as RIR address block allocation and the number of BGP4+ AS path. Degree of transition may be measured by comparison of IPv4 and IPv6 traffic on dual protocol IXes, or IPv6 support by mail, DNS, Web servers at Fortune 500 companies. Reliability and stability may be tracked by BGP4+ route flaps, while IPv6 Internet characteristics may be monitored by people's recognition of IPv6 by country.
