Cyber Area Research offers a commercial product called "SURFPOINT", a database of host server locations and communication lines based on the IP address. Although SURFPOINT is not free, the company offers free blogparts using SURFPOINT technologies to promote the product.
A very unique one is the "IPv4 Address Depletion Day Count Down" blogpart made available on February 8. This blogpart shows the number of remaining IPv4 addresses globally, and the expected depletion day in real time.
Cyber Area Research monitors the IP address allocation information published by NIRs worldwide on a daily basis to research IP addresses in different countries. Based on this input, the company calculates how much IPv4 addresses are consumed.
This data enables them to calculate the remaining number and consumption of IPv4 addresses, and expect the day when the addresses will be depleted. When a browser loads the blogpart, the remaining number of IPv4 addresses and expected depletion day are retrieved from the server and displayed on the screen.
The company has also published other blogparts like weather sticker to forecast the local weather based on the access point guessed from the user’s IP address, and who-is searcher to show various information based on the IP address. These blogparts, the company spokesman says, appeals the company’s business strength in the IP address area to the consumers.
For your information, as of March 1 2007, the remaining number of IPv4 addresses is approximately 1.3 billion, and the expected day of depletion is April 26 2016.
