Reinan Cable Network (RCN), a CATV company in Tsuruga City, Fukui Prefecture, announced that the petition they filed to the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications for a license for Mobile WiMAX experiments was accepted. RCN plans to start Mobile WiMAX experiments in November and they say that they are the first CATV company to perform WiMAX field trials.

Using Mobile WiMAX devices by Huawei Technologies, a Chinese company, the field trials will be performed using the 2.5 GHz band. With Fujikura building the WiMAX field trial system to support the experiments, RCN will check the feasibility of Mobile WiMAX services in provincial cities.

They will set up three Mobile WiMAX base stations within Tsuruga City, Fukui Prefecture, which is RCN's service area, and they plan to perform field trials for about one year, from November 2006 to October 2007. They will check the radio wave propagation, mobility, and handover as well as application operations, and will examine its use for local public services such as wireless Internet service and community bus operation support.
