Microsoft announced Windows Mobile, a new platform for mobile devices. It is expected to be used by a wide range of products such as PDAs or Smartphones.
The newly launched Windows Mobile is a new platform that will be developed by Microsoft as part of the companys strategy for mobile devices. In the announcement, Microsoft describes the new platform as not just connecting devices, but connecting people and their data. The categories of Pocket PC, and Smartphones will be continued in the future, but the relevant software will be named Windows Mobile software for Pocket PCs and Windows Mobile software for Smartphones respectively. Development kits will also be provided.
As for specific functions based on Pocket PC, use of wireless network will be promoted such as compliance with native support of Bluetooth and WiFi (wireless LAN), and upgraded multimedia capabilities will be available with functions equivalent to Windows Media Player 9. E-mail synchronization will be simple with Exchange Server 2003. Integration with .NET service will also be possible.
Products supporting the new platform are provided by companies such as Fujitsu, Siemens, Hewlett Packard, Toshiba, Dell and Acer.
