NTT Communications, IBM Japan, Cisco Systems, and ProStorage will start trial of wide-area storage network combining IP network and iSCSI storage in mid-June between Tokyo and Nagoya. It is the first time ever that iSCSI storage trial is conducted between remote locations, they said.
A wide-area storage network is realized by connecting storage scattered in different locations with IP, making it possible to share data or to backup remotely. The four companies plan to use iSCSI protocol to send and to receive SCSI commands on IP network. They will have dedicated connection between Tokyo and Nagoya of over 1Gbps.
More specifically, Cisco's iSCSI storage network switch and IBM's storage will be combined on NTT Com's long-distance, ultrabroadband network for the trial, and ProStorage will provide technical support.
The aim of the trial is to test connectivity between hardware, software and network, as well as to examine the basic performance of wide-area storage network. The effects of bandwith and delay will be investigated. Trial is also planned on the distribution and management of storage resources on the network.
