Microsoft officially announces Windows Server 2003

Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition

On April 24th (local time), Microsoft hosted an event in San Francisco to announce the official release of Windows Server 2003. It is a successor server OS to Windows 2000 Server. It was originally called “Windows .NET Server 2003”, but was later renamed to “Windows Server 2003”.

To cover the wide range of functions from departmental server to mission critical uses, five editions were made available: Datacenter Edition, Enterprise Edition, Standard Edition, Web Edition and Windows Small Business Server 2003.

There is even a 64-bit version that supports Intel 64-bit CPU Itanium with the Datacenter Edition and the Enterprise Edition. Small Business Server will be available in the 3rd quarter of 2003.

Windows Server 2003 is already available in 13 languages, and other languages may be supported within 30 to 45 days.

Also announced simultaneously were Visual Studio .NET 2003, a development platform, and SQL Server 2000 Enterprise Edition (64-bit) database management system. Not only does Visual Studio .NET 2003 support .NET Framework 1.1, it now also supports the .NET Compact Framework subset targeted at PDAs and embedded devices.

Visual Studio .NET 2003 is available in 3 editions: Enterprise Architect, Enterprise Developer, and Professional. They cost $2,499, $1,799, and $1,079 respectively.
