NTT DATA announced that it has formed a technical alliance with Korean company, HAREX InfoTech to build a system for a trial service of credit card payments using the infrared communication function of mobile phones.
HAREX has provided credit card payment service via mobile phones mainly in Seoul, Korea since April 2002. This technical alliance will promote system development for a trial service in Japan based on HAREX's expertise.
NTT DATA will call on communication carriers to start the trail service in the first half of 2003 and launch actual full-scale commercial service in 2004. NTT DATA said this announcement has no relation to trial service by NTT DoCoMo that is planned to start in June 2003.
Credit card data is stored in end user's mobile phone, and end users can purchase goods in member stores using the infrared transmission. NTT DATA's payment network "INFOX-NET" is used for communication between member stores and credit card companies. In this trial service, one mobile phone will be able to handle several credit card data.
