NTT DoCoMo, Inc., Visa International, Nippon Shinpan, OMC Card and AEON Credit announced the companies will jointly test a service for making credit card payments using the DoCoMo 504i and 504iS series mobile phones, which are equipped with infrared transmission (IrDA) ports. A commercialized service is targeted for spring 2004.
The test will use the infrared transmission function of the 504i/504iS series to make credit card payments with a view to offering the service commercially. DoCoMo is currently mulling whether to let its FOMA terminals have the same function. In the first phase which will start in June in Tokyo, Nippon Shinpan will select 3,000 monitors from among its Visa cardholders. In the second phase, to start in fall, the scale will expand to simulate an actual commercial service. The credit card companies are targeting to launch the service in spring 2004.
The trial leverages a DoCoMo "i-appli" application and IrDA port, so the cell phones themselves will not have a new function. Based on the "Visa Proximity Payments Messaging Specification," monitors will download their credit card data using "i-appli" and make credit card payments by operating the application at shops equipped with IrDA reading devices. About 500 IrDA reading devices will be provided to member shops in phase one.
The companies claim DoCoMo's i-appli functionality will expand credit card usage to new customers and merchant segments by leveraging text and visual content to provide personalized marketing.
