8 ISPs in Japan including @nifty announced the official launch of the ISP Alliance for IP Telephony as of April 1. The major tasks of the alliance, which will leave the door open to other ISPs, include reviewing the issues related to IP telephony and preparation of the guideline.
The Alliance kicked off with 8 providers as executive members: @nifty, OCN, DION, So-net, NEC, ODN, Plara, and Panasonic hi-ho. It will call for participation to the alliance by other providers as long as they meet the service policy and quality requirements. Although some of the executive members build their own VoIP networks, they joined the aliance as a provider instead of a carrier.
The alliance is to draw up the guideline to be followed by participating ISPs. It will also exchange ideas on challenges and issues such as interconnection to make VoIP more popular. With a common service name and logo in view as well, the alliance seek further development of IP telephony and broadband communication, it said.
