Microsoft announced the release to manufacturing (RTM) of its next generation server OS "Windows Server 2003" family on March 31 (local time). Microsoft will formally introduce them in a worldwide launch event on April 24 (local time) at the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium in San Francisco, US.
Windows Server 2003 is the successor server OS to "Windows 2000 Server" family. Security and performance are improved and some new functions are added.
According to Microsoft, it has achieved 50% deduction in deployment cost, 100 times scalability at one-tenth the cost per transaction and 40% increase in stability as compared to "Windows NT Server 4.0".
"Windows Server 2003" includes the following seven products, ranging from the Web edition for small Web sites to the 64-bit support edition for data centers.
- Windows Server 2003 Datacenter Edition
- Windows Server 2003 Datacenter Edition for 64-bit Itanium 2 Systems
- Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition
- Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition for 64-bit Itanium 2 Systems
- Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition
- Windows Server 2003 Web Edition
- Windows Small Business Server 2003 (available in the third quarter of 2003)

As well as Windows Server 2003, it will be also formally launched on April 24. It is available to developers now through MSDN and is scheduled to be available to customers through PC manufacturers in the second quarter of this year.
